Sounds of the University – Garden

Welcome to the Soundwalk.

Open yourself to the location you are in.
Open your ears.
What sonic details can you hear?
What constitutes the characteristics of the soundscape?

Now close your eyes.
What do you hear?
Is your aural perception heightened?
How are your other senses affected?
What do you feel?
What do you smell?
What defines the space?

You are positioned within a soundscape.
Like all human beings we are listeners and sound makers in this world and therefore active participants in the creation of our soundscapes.

Focus.
Can you bring your existing position within the soundscape to full consciousness?

Sounds occur.
And they pass.
Ephemeral.
Or are they?
Some remain.
Constant, ever-present.
White noise.
Traffic.
The low hum of vehicles.
Perpetual motion.
Moving towards a future, ever closer towards complete climate catastrophe.
Or have we already arrived?

Now turn your attention inward.
To your inner sounds, thoughts, and voices.
Listen to these – your thoughts, how you process perceived sounds, and your wandering mind.

How do these relate to the environment; the space you are inhabiting?
Can you link your listening experience and your inner thoughts to your acoustic environment?

Is listening an ecological act?
Within our listening practice lies the potential for developing a conscious relationship with the environment.
